Sites, Parks, Lakes and Camping
Five parks with various activities offer visitors and
residents a chance to have some fun in a relaxed atmosphere. Creston’s
Park and Recreation department continually has many activities available
for those of all ages. Call 641-782-2000 for upcoming activities.
The office is located in the restored depot at 116 W. Adams Street.
Rainbow Park has two shelter houses, a beautifully restored fountain, playground area, picnic area and gazebo band shell. It is located in the 500 blocks of South Vine and South Birch.


Northwest of Creston is Summit
Lake. Summit Lake is an excellent spot for bass, channel cat
and crappie fishing. Call 641-782-1755 for more information.
Green
Valley Lake and State Park is three miles north of Creston.
The park and lake attracts campers with 145 campsites - 85 with electrical
hookups - swimmers, boaters and
water skiers as well. The lake provides a beach for swimming,
plus a beach house. Two four season cabins are available for rent as well.
Green Valley also offers great bass and crappie fishing. For

Five miles east of Creston is 12-Mile
Lake. The 1,500 acre park includes a 650 surface acre reservoir.
Recreation enthusiasts can enjoy hunting, fishing, hiking, and bird watching.
Fishermen from all over the state come to fish here. During the summer,
approximately 30 fishing tournaments take place at 12-Mile Lake. Call 641-782-1755

The newest and largest lake of the area is 3-Mile Lake which was recently named one of the Top Ten Lakes in Iowa by the Department of Natural Resources and in March of 2004 was named one of the top 96 Bass Lakes in the United States by Field & Stream Magazine. It has approximately 2,100 acres with 900 surface acres of water. This is Union County's largest recreational facility and offers fishing, swimming, skiing, hiking and camping with two campground overlooking the lake which have 80 sites to accommodate recreational vehicles, trailers and tent campers. Each site has electrical hookups. Water is available along with picnic sites, a fish cleaning station and dump station. Showers, sinks and flush toilets are available nearby at the year-around comfort station. Eight four-season cabins are available for rent as well. Public hunting ground is available. Overlooking the lake as well is the newest addition to the Three-Mile Lake Park, Three-Mile Lake Lodge which is available for rent by the public year-round. Recreation and Leisure
Moviegoers can go to The
Strand Theatre, located at 309 West Adams. The phone number
is 782-7224. For those wanting a little more culture, Crest Area Theatre
is a community theatre group that puts on four plays a year at the Southwestern
Performing Arts Theatre in the Area Arts and Wellness Center. In addition,
the Southwest Entertainment Series offers a variety of quality performances
and entertainment to the area.
Creston has two golf clubs, one public and one private.
The public course isPine Valley Golfon
Highway 34 West. Pine Valley also has one of the two bowling alleys in

driving range is Crestmoor Golf Club

Lanes is located at 301 N. Cherry and the phone number

The Southern Prairie YMCA is located at 1201 W. Townline Street, Creston; adjacent to the Southwestern Community College campus. The YMCA facility, established in 1995, consists of a six-lane indoor swimming pool with a diving board, a double size gymnasium, an indoor three-lane walking/jogging track, a racquetball court, fitness equipment room, youth game room and locker room facilities.
The YMCA primarily serves communities within a 20 mile radius of Creston. The YMCA offers youth sports instruction, swimming lessons for children and adults, water exercise classes, aerobics classes, adult leagues and family activities. Individuals and families may purchase an annual membership or participate on a daily fee basis. The YMCA is open daily year around. The Creston Park to Park Trail is approximately
a five-mile walking/biking trail located between McKinley Park (Adams Street)
and the south edge of Green Valley State Park along Green Valley Road in
west Creston.Future plans are to
extend the trail around Green Valley Lake State Park.
The main Uptown shopping district is on the north side of the railroad tracks near Creston's restored railroad depot. Adams, Montgomery, Pine, Maple and Elm Streets offer the most shopping. Park in one place and take a leisurely stroll from shop to shop.
From Uptown Creston drive along Highway 25 South, New York Avenue and Highway 34 East and West. Here you'll find several stores where you can find just what you need.
Also check out Highway 25 and Townline Street to shop at some of the stores specializing in drapery, music, electronics and more.
Take a drive around Creston and
you will find many places to shop 'til you drop.
